Wine clubs vs. Learning via luck/trial and error?

Is it better to join a wine "club" like RiotWine or to just buy what appeals to me at the grocery store when I go shopping for the week's supplies? Where's the snobbery line? Have you had good experiences with wine clubs? I'm really wanting to know if it's worth my money (I don't have much) to join a wine club.

Wine clubs can be good as they offer specials and discounts once you get hooked on a particular wine.
